Music is an integral part of life, accompanying us wherever we go. Edmonton residents have the opportunity to enjoy live performances, listen to favorite songs, and spend quality time with family over two days thanks to the Heart of the City Music Festival.
This festival was established by the Heart of the City Society to support and promote local emerging musicians. Held annually in downtown Edmonton, the two-day event brings together music lovers and community members. Learn more at edmontonski.
Festival Origins
The Heart of the City Music Festival first debuted in Edmonton in 2003. The event was well-received, inspiring a surge of grassroots initiatives from local residents eager to enhance Edmonton’s cultural offerings for both locals and visitors.
Thanks to the efforts of community members like Roy Agnew, Mark Rouble, and Darlene Arsenault, the festival was envisioned as a platform to nurture and promote musicians from central Edmonton neighborhoods. The goal was to provide emerging artists with an audience to showcase their talent while fostering a love for live music among attendees.
The inaugural festival was held in Giovanni Caboto Park, and the following year it moved to the Sacred Heart Church football field, near former Mayor McCauley’s apartments. By its third year, the festival returned to Giovanni Caboto Park, which has remained its home.
In 2004, Heart of the City organizers partnered with Don Snider, founder of the Edmonton Folk Music Festival. This collaboration allowed for the rental of two large stages and access to a larger venue in Giovanni Caboto Park, adjacent to the Boys and Girls Club in Little Italy.
Festival Growth
By 2009, the Heart of the City festival expanded its offerings to include visual artists and free workshops. In 2010, the festival extended to a two-day event, marking its rise in popularity among Edmonton residents.
As the festival grew, so did the number of participating musicians. Some performers launched their careers by progressing to larger stages, such as the Edmonton Folk Music Festival and other prominent venues. New members joined the festival’s board of directors, bringing fresh ideas and programs to the event.
Community Support
In 2013, CJSR and the Bissell Centre became pivotal partners in the festival’s development. With their support, dozens of musicians featured at the event were included in “Beating Strong,” a unique compilation CD distributed freely across Edmonton.
Over the years, numerous organizations have contributed their time and energy to the festival’s success, including the McCauley Community League, Boyle Street Community Services, Native Friendship Centre, Nina Haggerty Arts Centre, and others. Without these contributions, the festival would not exist.
Festival Highlights
Every spring, Giovanni Caboto Park comes alive with music lovers during the two-day festival. Visitors can explore small food and drink stalls, attend live performances on the main stage, and participate in interactive music workshops. A dedicated children’s area offers fun activities and entertainment for younger attendees.
