The Success Story of a Bookstore Edmonton Can’t Imagine Life Without

For 50 years, Audrey’s Books has been a beloved independent bookstore in the heart of Edmonton. This cherished shop has survived economic downturns, the rise of big-box chain stores, and even the digital revolution. Today, it stands as a vital cultural hub for the city, championing local authors and inspiring new generations of readers. In this article on edmontonski.com, we explore how this small, independent bookstore has managed to thrive in a globalized world.

The History of the Bookstore

In 2025, Audrey’s Books celebrates its 50th anniversary. The store first opened its doors in 1975, when Audrey Veale and her husband, Ewart, purchased the bookstore previously owned by the renowned publisher Mel Hurtig. The venture was financially backed by the Ammond family and Audrey Acroyd, and the store was named in her honour.

In 1988, the bookstore changed hands, purchased by Steve and Sharon Budnarchuk, who would make a significant contribution to its growth. Sharon had been a publisher’s sales representative, while Steve brought two decades of experience in bookstore management. Together, they were the perfect team.

However, the new ownership also marked the beginning of challenging times. Audrey’s Books was hit hard by provincial government layoffs in the early ’90s, which left thousands in the downtown core jobless. At the same time, it faced new competition from the rise of big-box chains like Chapters and Indigo, followed by the growing popularity of online retailers like Amazon.

How the Bookstore Weathered the Storm

The Budnarchuks managed to navigate these challenges. They credit their success to sheer hard work, putting in long hours to manage costs effectively while simultaneously engaging with the community. Sharon was also a member of various boards and public organizations, which undoubtedly helped the business.

Steve always highlighted Sharon’s exceptional talent for selecting and ordering books. There was no formula or mathematical model for knowing what to buy; instead, Sharon had an intuitive sense of the public’s mood and the cultural climate.

As a result, Audrey’s Books cemented its reputation as the city’s literary hub, a place where local and visiting authors could connect with the public.

A Closer Look at Sharon Budnarchuk

To truly understand the reasons for the bookstore’s success, one must get to know the people behind its story. Sharon Budnarchuk’s career began in 1969. While still a student at the university, she was already working as a textbook buyer for a bookstore chain. After that, she spent 10 years as a book agent.

Eventually, she and her husband purchased Audrey’s Books. The fact that they worked together for so many years while maintaining a warm relationship is something Sharon jokes “deserves a medal.”

Once, at a book fair in Miami, Sharon had the opportunity to have tea with Margaret Thatcher. She was struck by the meeting and by Thatcher’s focus and confidence: “Some people have an aura. They walk into a room, and even if your back is turned, you know something is there, and you have to turn around.” It’s a sentiment that speaks volumes about Sharon herself.

In 2019, Sharon retired and handed over the reins of the bookstore to her daughter, Kelly Dyer. Kelly is no newcomer, having worked in the store for three decades and learning the ins and outs of the business. She dedicated much of her time to the children’s section and has now taken full leadership. Like her parents, Kelly has a deep passion for the work, ensuring the future of Audrey’s Books looks bright and prosperous.

Audrey’s Books has survived decades of change thanks to one family’s love for literature and their unwavering dedication. It stands as a powerful example of how passion, hard work, and a genuine belief in one’s mission can create something far more meaningful than just a business.
