Beginnings in Business

For over 50 years, Jack Donald has been a visionary leader, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and community enthusiast. His ambition, foresight, and business acumen significantly contributed to the economy of the Red Deer region. Through his efforts, new jobs were created, and investments flowed into the community. His relentless charitable work has benefited numerous groups.

Born in 1934 in Edmonton, Jack pursued a career that began modestly but grew to extraordinary heights. After graduating from high school, he married and, in 1957, started his first business with his wife—a service station. While managing the business, Jack studied mechanics at SAIT.

In 1964, the Donald family relocated from Edmonton to Red Deer, where they founded Parkland Oil Products Ltd., with Jack taking the role of director. By 1968, Jack expanded his business ventures by establishing a real estate company while still managing Parkland Oil Products Ltd.. Later, he co-founded Park Country Broadcasting (KG Country) in Red Deer and served as a partner and vice president of Brandt Industries Ltd. Throughout his career, Jack led numerous companies involved in oil production and agricultural equipment manufacturing.

Commitment to Community and Youth

In addition to his business pursuits, Jack committed himself to youth-oriented volunteer work. In 1969, he became president of the Optimist Club of Red Deer. By 1970, Jack was elected as an alderman in Red Deer, serving for two years.

A Shift to Science and Public Service

In 1972, Jack stepped down as alderman to focus on his newfound passion for science. He accepted a position on the governing board of Red Deer College, where he served as a director for three years. Even after leaving this role, Jack continued to inspire students, participating in various college business programs. His companies became benefactors of the college, making substantial donations. With Jack’s support, the college established its School of Business.

Beyond science, Jack remained deeply involved in the community. He founded Westerner Park in Red Deer and, in 1979, oversaw the relocation of exhibition grounds and the construction of the Parkland Pavilion and Centrium Arena. Thanks to Jack’s generosity, the Donald Administrative Building was built at Westerner Park.

Leadership in Alberta’s Economy

In 1983, Jack became a director and later the chairman of Alberta Opportunity Company, which funded small businesses across the province. From 1995 to 2000, he chaired three provincial tax review commissions, focusing on improving Alberta’s competitiveness and reducing taxation for its residents. For over 26 years, Jack served as a founding director and chairman of the Alberta Treasury Branch.

Key Achievements

In 2002, Jack was named Red Deer’s Citizen of the Year and was later awarded the GH Dawe Memorial Award for his contributions to education. That same year, Jack stepped down as CEO of Parkland Oil Products Ltd. Under his leadership, the company established its own oil refinery and over 400 retail service stations across Western and Northern Canada. It also became an independent fuel marketer and distributor.

In 2005, Jack received the Family Generosity of Spirit Award for his active charitable contributions. By 2011, he was inducted into the Southern Alberta Business Hall of Fame. Jack continues to actively develop his businesses and support the Red Deer community.
