Born on March 21, 1950, in Saskatoon, Charles grew up as one of four siblings. In 1958, his family moved to Calgary. From a young age, Charles displayed independence; at just six years old, he confidently ran errands for his family at local hardware stores.
After graduating from high school, Charles attended the University of Calgary, earning a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1971. He later completed an MBA in 1982. During his studies, he met and fell in love with Joan Cuthbertson, an advocate for youth and public education. Together, they worked toward building stronger communities.

During Nexen’s operations in Yemen, Charles led initiatives to improve the economic and social well-being of local communities, ensuring they benefitted from the company’s oil exploration.
