Childhood and Early Life
The future scientist was born in the small Albertan town of Lac La Biche in 1920. In 1926, his family relocated to Edmonton. In the larger city, he benefited from high-quality schooling. Chemistry was always Dr. Lemieux’s favourite subject. A graduate student who was courting his sister played a significant role in this, as he simultaneously inspired Raymond to pursue science.
Raymond Lemieux enrolled at the University of Alberta to study Chemistry, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree. He continued his education at McGill University, completing his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry.
The Development of His Scientific Career
After graduating, he received a fellowship at Ohio State University. There, his research into the structure of streptomycin was funded by Bristol Laboratories Inc. It was during this work that the scientist met Virginia, a fellow doctoral student, who later became his wife.
Following his time in the United States, Raymond Lemieux returned to Canada. Initially, he spent two years as an Associate Professor at the University of Saskatchewan. He then served as a Senior Research Officer at the Prairie Regional Laboratory.
The Scientist’s Moment of Triumph
All this experience led to his breakthrough in 1953, when he and his colleague George Huber successfully synthesized sucrose for the first time in history. This discovery was of immense scientific importance—a true revolution in carbohydrate chemistry that also led to the discovery of the anomeric effect. He was immediately invited to speak at an important chemistry seminar in New Brunswick.
In 1954, he moved to Ottawa, where he established the Department of Chemistry and helped in the construction of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences. Here, he solidified his leading international status in chemistry through significant foundational contributions that enhanced the understanding of chemical bonds and the determination of molecular structures and shapes.
A Return Home to Alberta
In 1961, the scientist and his family returned to Alberta because Harry Gunning was building a powerful Chemistry department with a world-class research base there. Dr. Lemieux naturally became a Professor and the Head of the Organic Chemistry Department.
A year after arriving in Edmonton, Lemieux also founded the company “R&L Molecular Research Ltd.,” which specialized in antibiotic development. The company produced a wide range of substances, including semi-synthetic antibiotics, rubber-related compounds, and heavy water for clients around the globe. In the 1960s, it was the largest private employer of PhDs in the region.
In 1977, the “Chembiomed Ltd.” corporation was also founded, initially owned by the university, with the goal of leveraging the potential of the doctor’s research in carbohydrate chemistry.
Dr. Lemieux received widespread global recognition throughout his career. The American Chemical Society published his memoir, “Explorations with Sugars: How Sweet It Was,” which spans 22 chapters. Raymond Lemieux received numerous awards, including the International King Faisal Prize for Science, the Tishler Prize, and the C. S. Hudson Award, among others.
Dr. Lemieux passed away from an aneurysm in 2000.
